New Parent Letter
Welcome New CWC Parent,
We are so pleased to have your child as a member of our team. We want your experiences with us to memorable and want to give you some helpful information to start your season with us. Here are some commonly asked questions.
What should we bring to practice? Wear t-shirt/shorts, bring wrestling shoes or a clean pair of sneakers (please do not wear them outside – we need to keep the mats clean), head gear, a water bottle, and a hat or hooded sweatshirt to wear out after practice. Sanitizing hand wipes are helpful for wiping down head gear, hands & bottoms of shoes after practice. Wrestlers with braces may want to wear mouth guards.
Are parents required to remain at practice? No – parents may leave but please be sure that you can be reached in case we need to call you. For the grade school wrestlers, parents may want to remain until practice get started to make sure shoes & gear are ready and to hear any information on upcoming matches, etc that the coach may communicate at the beginning of practice. Please return promptly before the end of practice. For children under 7 years old, coaches require parents to remain on site.
What should we expect at practice? Wrestlers are paired relative to weight and age during practice and most especially at competitions. They will have cardio drills, learn moves and with partners. Coaches will talk about upcoming events and meets.
What should we do after practice? Make sure your wrestler gets shower or bath and washes well. Be sure to allow gear to dry out and wash all practice clothing. We want to prevent wrestlers from getting skin infections.
Where can I buy wrestling gear? Rivanna Gear & Apparel (gives a 15% discount on shoes etc, to CWC wrestlers), Downtown Athletic, Dick’s Sporting Goods, jrwrestling.com, allamericanwrestlingsupply.com, wrestlingone.com (The coach often has used, donated shoes and headgear as well).
What should we expect at competitions? With the Central Virginia Wrestling League, you can expect dual meets (2 teams) or tri-meets (three teams) to last between 2-3 hours. Meets (sometimes called matches) can be confusing the first time around so please don’t hesitate to ask for help or directions. Many tournaments, which are typically longer, all-day affairs, have a food court or an area to buy food and drinks and t-shirts too so be sure to bring a little extra money just in case. The CVWL season wraps up at the end of Feb or beginning of March with a League Championship Tourney.
Do I need to purchase a wrestling singlet? The team does have singlets to loan but we also offer the opportunity to buy a singlet at cost. Information on purchasing singlets, sweatshirts, etc will be given out at practice.
How can I help the club as a parent? Parents are an integral part of our team. Parents help in many ways including as volunteer coaches, driving, reinforcing the ideas of good sportsmanship and spreading the word about the team to friends & neighbors. We also need help with fund raising and our yearly golf outing by finding sponsors and donors.
What else happens with the club? At the end of the season we have a pot luck team dinner and awards banquet. This is a lot of fun and a great way to end the year.
What if I have more questions? Feel free to ask your coaches or ask other parents.
Phone & email contact info will be given out at practice. Also check the website for updates. We look forward to getting to know you and your family.
